Module 04: Multi-Agent Orchestration & Subagent Fleets

Master subagent delegation, eliminate context pollution, configure workspace isolation (inherit, branch, share), and understand reactive wakeups.

The greatest limitation in modern LLM-driven development is context pollution. When a single agent inspects 20 massive log files, reads 50 documentation pages, and attempts to write code all in one conversation window, reasoning degrades. Subagents solve this completely.

Architect's Axiom

Never let the Conductor do the plumbing. The parent agent orchestrates the system; specialized subagents handle the high-volume data crunching in isolated memory spaces.

1. Subagent Lifecycle: How It Works

Antigravity allows an orchestrator agent to spawn background worker agents using invoke_subagent. Each subagent receives an isolated prompt, its own conversation thread, and dedicated tool execution rights, returning only the distilled synthesis to the parent.

2. Built-in Subagent Types

  • self: Clones the parent agent's configuration, system rules, and model. Used to perform an intensive coding sub-task without cluttering parent context.
  • research: A read-only specialist equipped with search and file reading tools. Ideal for exploring large codebases, scraping web docs, and analyzing logs without write access.
  • image-generator: Generates, formats, and validates visual assets directly into workspace media paths.

3. Workspace Isolation Modes Explained

When invoking a subagent, the Workspace parameter determines how files are accessed:

Mode Mechanism Best Used For
Directly operates in the parent workspace directory. Standard pair-programming, refactoring, and file generation.
branch Creates an isolated physical clone of the workspace. High-risk experiments, speculative refactors, destructive testing.
share Uses Git worktrees to share repository history without duplicating files. Parallel branch development on multi-gigabyte repositories.

4. The Reactive Wakeup Protocol (Zero Polling)

In naive agent frameworks, orchestrators run wasteful while true; sleep 5; check_status() loops that burn API tokens. Antigravity operates on an Event-Driven Reactive Wakeup architecture:

When the parent launches a subagent or background task, it simply terminates its tool calls and sleeps. The operating environment automatically wakes the parent the millisecond the background task completes or delivers a message.
