Module 05: The Model Spectrum: Latency, Cost & Thinking Economics

The comprehensive model selection matrix. Match workloads to pro, flash, or flash_lite, calibrate thinking effort, and optimize token economics.

Not every engineering task requires a 2-trillion-parameter reasoning powerhouse. Firing up a heavyweight model to format a JSON file or rename CSS classes is like hiring an executive architect to paint a fence. Sovereign engineering means matching the model tier to the cognitive load.

Architect's Axiom

Speed is a feature. Cost is a constraint. Reserve deep reasoning for architectural trade-offs, security validation, and multi-system integration; route mechanical tasks to lightning-fast sub-tiers.

1. The Four Intelligence Tiers

  • inherit (Default): Matches the parent orchestrator model. Ensures full cognitive parity when continuing high-level development tasks.
  • pro: The apex tier. Maximum reasoning capacity, deep contextual synthesis, complex multi-file refactoring, and root-cause failure analysis.
  • flash: High throughput and balanced reasoning. Ideal for code search, reading documentation, writing unit tests, and drafting component scaffolding.
  • flash_lite: Sub-second response time. Designed for deterministic lookups, syntax linting, JSON schema formatting, and log filtering.

2. Workload Allocation Matrix

Engineering Task Recommended Tier Thinking Effort Rationale
Full-Stack Architecture Planning pro 0.8 – 1.0 Requires anticipating systemic trade-offs and failure modes.
Deep Bug RCA & Memory Leaks pro 0.6 – 0.9 Needs complex multi-step reasoning across stack traces.
Unit Test Scaffolding 0.3 – 0.5 Fast execution against defined input/output boundaries.
Schema Validation & Linting flash_lite None (0.0) Deterministic; zero deep deliberation required.

3. Calibrating Thinking Effort

Antigravity features a reasoning calibration slider (thinking effort). When set between 0.1 and 0.4, the model delivers immediate, low-latency code execution. When increased to 0.7 to 1.0, the engine performs internal chain-of-thought hypothesis testing, verifying edge cases before generating a single line of code.
